Ghost dog claws on the linoleum, a common pet haunting.

Ghost dog claws on the linoleum, a common pet haunting.

When I was a kid (10?), my dad had to go to work at 4:30am. The dog thought this was too early and when mom and dad got up she would climb the stairs, thumpa-thumpa-thumpa, walk to my bed, tak-tak-tak (ghost dog claws on the linoleum), and jump onto the foot of my bed until I had to get up to go to school.

After the dog had passed on, every once in a while I would hear thumpa-thumpa-thumpa then tak-tak-tak (despite the fact that my bedroom now has wall-to-wall carpeting) and then hear AND FEEL a weight at the foot of my bed.

I’m told by other websites that this is a common pet haunting.

I would agree, James. We have several on this site describing the sound exactly as you do. Pet hauntings in the kindest sense by both dogs and cats seem to be frequent and persistent. Read similar stories in our archive of Pet Ghosts, Animal Ghosts at DreamWatch.com

Pet ghost dog named Gunnar.

Pet ghost dog named Gunnar, gone, but not …

“The hardest thing I had to do.”

I had a dog named Gunnar that I adopted in 2000 when he was 5 weeks old. In February 2015, Gunnar let me know it was time to let him go, he was old, could barely walk, and had decided to stop eating. It was definitely the hardest thing I had to do.

“I feel something leaning against me …”

Now though, every now and then, I swear I feel something brushing or leaning against me and blow it off as one of my daughter’s cats, but when I feel the leaning, I look down and I don’t see anyone.

A large herding breed dog, Gunnar used to lean on me when he thought it was time for me to go to bed, when he wanted attention, or when he was scared. I hope he isn’t scared where ever dogs go, after they pass. I hope Gunnar is just here with me, helping me get through tough times as he always had.

Little boy ghost and ghost dog Molly.

Little boy ghost.

My border collie Molly had to be put down about two weeks ago due to a terrible cancer. We were so bonded. I loved her beyond words. I haven’t seen or heard her ghost but I’m expecting some sign and here’s why: I live in a very very old house and we do have a ghost—a little boy ghost about 6 or 7 years old. I saw him twice coming up the front sidewalk, shortly after we moved in, and then he’d just disappear.

My mother came to see my new house and she saw the little boy ghost too; he was sitting on the landing of the stairs leading up to the bedroom, watching us downstairs. That was about 40 years ago and nothing since so I thought the boy was gone, but he’s still here.

“Did you hear that?”

My plumber recently was kneeling on the floor, working on an upstairs bathroom pipe and he loves this old house so I was telling him about it, including the little boy ghost story. That’s when we both heard a bell ringing twice downstairs and the plumber looked at me puzzled and asked, “Did you hear that?” Yes, and we both knew there was no one else in the house. I went to the windows and looked out but of course there was no one on the road, no one ringing a bell. The little boy ghost had been listening to me telling about seeing him and he was letting us know that he was listening.

Hoping to see ghost dog Molly.

I didn’t even remember just then that there even was a bell downstairs but there is; it sits on a windowsill in the sunroom and only is noticed when I dust. So now I hope the little boy ghost appears once more and that my dog Molly is sitting or standing beside him.

The only thing that worries me is that Molly was put down at a vet center an hour from here. I left her to be cremated.

Could her spirit have followed me and my son and my sister (who were there to say goodbye) back to our car and back here to her home?

I hope she isn’t lost and looking for us at the hospital. I talk to her every night when I go to bed. I want her to know that she is loved and missed. Maybe with her company now the little boy ghost will be able to find peace, too.

Thanks for your story, Nancy. I believe spirits are not bound by limitations of the physical world. That Molly was put down at the vet’s makes no difference. Molly would find her way home, or to your spirit energy no matter where in the world. That’s my opinion. I hope you see her and that her spirit will comfort you. It’s so sweet of you to think of Molly’s spirit bringing peace to the little boy ghost.

Ghost dog. Collar jingling. Footsteps prancing.

My daughter has a dog that is eight months old and it sleeps in her room at night with the door closed, so it will not roam the house. She was out with friends last night and was going to be home late. As every night at bedtime we put the dog in her room and shut the door.

At 1:45 AM I heard the dog come running into the bedroom with her little collar jingling and prancing footsteps. It came to my side of the bed and scratched on the mattress side, as it is short and cannot jump into the bed and it was sniffing by my face. I did not move, hoping it would leave and go back to my daughter’s room.

The dog whimpered like it wanted to play.

It ran around to the other side of the bed where my boyfriend was sleeping and started clawing on the mattress on his side. The dog whimpered like it wanted him to play. It was sniffing by his face. It stayed there longer by my boyfriend than did me. My boyfriend abruptly awoke and looked and laid his head back down and went to sleep. I thought my boyfriend woke up because the dog was licking his hand on the side of the bed. My boyfriend fell back to sleep.

I continue to lay there motionless hoping the dog would go back to my daughter’s room. Finally the jingling stopped and I thought the dog laid down on the carpet to go to sleep. After about a minute, I realized my daughter was not making any noises in the house and I wondered if she was even home yet and how did the dog escape from her shut door?

I woke up my boyfriend and asked him what made you wake up about five minutes ago and he was startled. He said, “What are you talking about?” I said, “I think the dog got out of the room and came in here.” My daughter was not home yet.

He went and checked and opened the room door and the dog was still in the room, and the door was still shut! I never felt any breathing or smelled anything, just hearing the dog for a few minutes. It must be someone’s ghost dog! This is our family’s first dog and we are the only family that has lived in this house that we have built.

Ghost dog Roxy’s last lick from beyond

I had to have my beloved German shepherd put to sleep the other day. I cannot describe my heartbreak. I cried all day and was deeply distressed. I felt guilty and so badly wanted her back. The day after, I went for a lie down, I was exhausted with grief. I lay on my bed, unable to sleep. A million thoughts were going through my head and I was not concentrating on any one thought.

Then Roxy’s head appeared close, in front of my face. I could see in detail every hair on her head, felt her breath, and I could smell her. She licked my face once and then she was gone. It lasted 1-2 seconds. It helped me a lot, I know that she’s ok wherever her beautiful spirit is and that she still loves me and forgives me.

Ghost dog & squeak toys

Twelve years ago I brought home my eight week old Rottweiler puppy and I named her Lexie.  She was my protector and best friend for twelve years.  Lexie was about a year and a half when I started dating the man I am currently with, and she loved him and was as much his dog as mine. February 2015 we had to say good bye to Lexie as her quality of life had diminished and she could hardly walk.  Both my boyfriend and I took her to the vet that day.

Lexie loved her squeak toys and she would squeak the toy until she got the squeak out of the toy.  After Lexie passed I took all her toys and put them in a basket downstairs in my basement with her bed and her cage. In August, my boyfriend and I were sitting in my family room when we heard a distinctive squeak come from the living room where I used to keep her basket of toys.  It was a Saturday night around 7pm.

We looked all around for a toy but found nothing.  Since then Lexie has come to visit us fifteen times, on Saturdays at the same time every time except for two times.  She came on Thanksgiving day when I was hosting dinner for my family.  Several family members heard the squeak, and on New Year’s Day.  We’ve recorded the squeak three times.  It is unmistakable. There is no denying that the sound is from a squeak toy.  When I hear the squeak I almost expect to see her, but it’s only the sound I hear. Sometimes it startles me. I cry and get goose bumps clear down my legs.  We still miss her deeply. We don’t go out on Saturday nights anymore because we don’t want to miss Lexie squeak her toy! I would love to talk to someone about this!

Pet ghost dog whines

Hi, my dog passed away. A few months later, I saw a strange image hard to explain. When I looked at it, it took off and knocked an ornament off the Christmas tree. Prior to that I have heard whining that sounded just like her when she wanted my attention. I believe she is here. I don’t live in the same house I did before, but I think she has found her way to me. I loved her so much and had her since she was a puppy. Miss her but know she is still here in spirit.

Old dog ghost back from Australian “veggie patch”

I don’t believe in anything but scientific fact let alone ghosts or animal ghosts.

However, I recently had an old dog 19 put to sleep, it was time for her to go. I loved her very much and I think the feeling was mutual.

I let her cool down for a few days before I buried her, as is my habit. Brain has electrical energy that doesn’t stop right away, it tapers off as the body cools.

So in the veggie patch she goes.

The next night, I am asleep and I get woken up by the bed moving. Now here is where things get scary and inexplicable to science.

I sleep on a water bed. I felt a movement like old dog doing a circle before lying down, I freeze, look up quickly but fully alert only moving my head because I can’t really believe this, my mind is racing as I can already sense what is happening, it’s all in a second or so til now. So I look up and I see a vague image of her circling then fading. Continue reading

Pet ghost Chihuahua still doing his favorite thing.

My rat terrier Chihuahua Barkley passed away unexpectedly from complications from a surgery. He was only 9. … The week of his passing my wife and I frequently broke down in tears as we were reminded of fond memories and locations in our house where he would do particular things. One place he was happiest was just laying in the bed with us, curled up next to one of us. That was one of his favorite things to do.

That following Sunday, early in the morning, I dreamt that I was laying in my bed, and suddenly I felt Barkley use his muzzle to force my arm out of the way like he used to do so often. While laying on my left side in bed in the dream, he nudged my right arm from behind forcefully, and very much in a way that said “it’s me.”

I felt his head, his body, and his personality in the sensation of this happening. He climbed over my side once I moved my hand, and circled in front of my midsection before laying down with his back touching me. I felt the heat, the personality, HIM, in all of this, but he was not there. It was everything but him there. In my dream, I began to cry, and reached for him to see if he was there, but he disappeared. I woke up with a headache, and laying in the same position I’d dreamt I was in.

Old dog pet ghost. “Raspy breathing sound… clear as day.”

Old dog pet ghost.

Old dog pet ghost breathing: This is a true event that happened in 1988.

My parents old dog and I were born around the same time in 1977. This dog and I were very close. In 1988 the dog became sick and had a raspy breathing sound for three days before it died on the family room floor with us by its side.

“I could hear that raspy breathing.”

A few days after its death we were all in the family room and I could hear that raspy breathing sound for probably a minute. It was clear as day. I remember it like yesterday and remember thinking “This proves spirits are real.”

The weird thing is, my mom and sister were in the room too and they couldn’t hear it. After that I never heard from that dog again. It must have been a goodbye.

I’ve never experienced any direct paranormal event with a deceased person, just my old dog.
