Shut the Cold Room Door

This is my mother’s story but also leads on to what happened to me this summer… in the cold room. I have loved the paranormal since I was young as I can remember. And this is my story

“The dogs would come running…”

In high school, my mother would be at my grandparents house alone, just relaxing and the dogs would chase what we call “something” down our long hallway. Everyone who was alone would hear a shriek and the dogs would come running as if they were being chased back.

I must tell you, you can see into it at the start and behind the stairs where the kitchen starts.

She saw a big black figure

Her most terrifying incident was when she was alone, watching television, the couch used to be directed towards the stairs as that was where the television was. She was watching when she heard footsteps, she looked into the hallway to see a big black figure run down the hallway. She called “Hello?” there was no response and so she thought she had seen nothing. Until my aunt said she experienced the same things too.

Another thing to happen in this house was telephone calls coming from the home phone with no one on the other line. They were traced and we found out they were coming from the basement. The thing is, there is only one home phone.

Shut the cold room door

My grandparents knew they had spirits after that and decided to shut the cold room door in the basement which was the oldest room in the house.

After that nothing happened.

My cousins and I were born and my grandparents still live there. My eldest cousin and I decided to open the cold room door as a joke. We went down there and I already had a sick feeling. We opened it quickly and a shadow quickly sped by and disappeared. At this point I was screaming and didn’t know what to think.

It’s been a month and I refuse to enter the house.

Haunted by a Dead Cat

Haunted by a Dead Cat

My cat Licorice passed away on Nov. 29, 2011. I moved to this place Oct. 2017, but she started to show up (?) in June of this year and has ruined my health.

“I have felt her paw, whiskers, nose …”

It started with the foot prints at night and then it was her crawling up under the bottom of my covers. Any night that I lay on the sofa (bad leg) she goes under the sofa and keeps hitting my back. I have ignored her for more than a month and have blocked all access to the sofa and the bed. I’m very confused though as I have felt her paw, whiskers, nose, claw and body.

“I can feel her kicking …”

As she’s dead, how can you do that as it’s just her spirit, and why is it when she’s under a pillow (which I just took away), I can feel her kicking? If I put my foot on the pillow to rest it or if I get up to go to the kitchen then come back to sit down and sit on her, I can feel her kick me so I move so I don’t hurt her???

My son thinks I’m losing it, but believe me, have a dead cat pat you on the shoulder and you’ll wish you were.

Haunted by a dead cat and desperate for answers

I don’t know where to go from here. Any suggestions? Please don’t think I’m a wacko, I’m not, just desperate for answers!

— D. Gideon in Canada

Thank you, D., for sharing your story. I’ll give my opinion on some of your issues, but please note that I’m no expert and these are simply opinions. I’ll share what a wise sage once advised me after speaking for hours about paranormal topics:

“Don’t believe anything I say, find out for yourself.”

That said, here I go. (In order as written in your story.)

  1. After six years and in a new “place” I wonder if you’re being haunted by Licorice, a dead cat. Similar affections? Mostly I hear of returns within weeks or months. Could it be something attached to the new “place”?
  2. I would not “ignore” this presence. Ignoring is tolerating. You’re the boss of your reality.
  3. Blocking physical access would have no effect. The spirit world is not bound by physical world rules. Blocking by means of your will should help.
  4. You wrote: “I can feel her kick me so I move so I don’t hurt her.” To me it seems that your moving to accommodate a dead cat is an act of acceptance.
  5. Your concern about hurting her (a dead cat) seems like an acceptance. In my opinion, there is no hurt. It doesn’t belong here. It is not of this dimension.
  6. REMEMBER: this is your story, your stage. You are the boss of your reality in this three-dimensional world.
  7. PROTECT YOURSELF. Envision and surround yourself with bright white light, know that only good and positive energies surround and protect you.
  8. TAKE CHARGE. There’s no wishy-washy here. No negotiation. You must demand and command action.
Stand in the middle of the rooms where you’ve experienced the most activity. Muster internal strength. Be calm. Be firm.
State the rules out loud: This is my home. This is my dimension, my reality. I command you to leave. Do not return. You must leave now. And repeat as necessary. Your only reaction should be GO AWAY.

Many Voices on the Day I Died

The Day I Died

This is a story of death (or at least a near death experience) that happened to me many years ago. There was a time that I went through a very dark phase in my life. I let my negative thoughts consume me. I spent many days thinking of how I hated my life. Most days I would go to work, come home, lie down, and cry myself to sleep.

“I felt more awake than ever.”

One of these days in particular, was so surreal. I had a rough afternoon at work, came home, and flopped myself down on my bed. I remember closing my eyes, and starting to doze off. I had left my bedroom light off, but when I came to, there was a soft light in my room.

Many voices — but no one was there

My brain felt foggy, I knew I was sleeping, but at the same time felt more awake than ever. It was then that I noticed I was lying on the floor. I was supposed to be on my bed, but how did I end up on the floor? I heard soft sounds in the background and felt an overwhelming feeling of sadness. I observed that I also felt strange, as if I were not in control of my own body. Suddenly, I heard the noises again like a person was sobbing. I did not see anyone around me, and pulled myself nearer to the sound.

As I crawled on the floor my room was bigger than before and darker too. The crying sounds grew louder, and it felt as though I were at a wake. The ambience was somber and I did not know why I was there. All I knew was I kept crawling towards the source of the sound. The closer I moved towards the crying sounds, the louder and more disturbing they grew. There was no other person present but it sounded as though there were many voices.

Another chance

When I thought I had reached the sounds, I then heard a loud voice in my head. Unlike the wailing sounds I heard around me, this internal voice was firm and commanding. I clearly heard, “You better hurry up!” I felt my entire body shake and opened my eyes. I examined my surroundings and found myself back in my bed.

To this day, I cannot account for what happened. I’ve had nightmares, and lucid dreams, but this experience was very different. Since that day, the only thing I could understand from this was that I died or had a near-death experience and was given another chance.

Ghost dog claws on the linoleum, a common pet haunting.

Ghost dog claws on the linoleum, a common pet haunting.

When I was a kid (10?), my dad had to go to work at 4:30am. The dog thought this was too early and when mom and dad got up she would climb the stairs, thumpa-thumpa-thumpa, walk to my bed, tak-tak-tak (ghost dog claws on the linoleum), and jump onto the foot of my bed until I had to get up to go to school.

After the dog had passed on, every once in a while I would hear thumpa-thumpa-thumpa then tak-tak-tak (despite the fact that my bedroom now has wall-to-wall carpeting) and then hear AND FEEL a weight at the foot of my bed.

I’m told by other websites that this is a common pet haunting.

I would agree, James. We have several on this site describing the sound exactly as you do. Pet hauntings in the kindest sense by both dogs and cats seem to be frequent and persistent. Read similar stories in our archive of Pet Ghosts, Animal Ghosts at DreamWatch.com

A female figure true ghost story

“A female figure standing over me.”

I don’t think this female figure is supernatural, but no one can explain to me what exactly it is, so I put it to you here.

This happened in 2014. I had been having vivid dreams and centered a lot on death, or the passing of a loved one.

I woke up to a female figure standing over me, but I wasn’t scared, in fact I looked, rolled over and put my back to it and went back to sleep.

“A cool breeze on the back on my neck.”

My sleep has been interrupted for a while now and one day I felt a cool breeze on the back on my neck multiple times—inside the house. Once I actually thought someone was blowing on the back of my neck and I turned to confront them—except I was alone in my own house.

This morning I’m hearing wind chimes. There are none unless the neighbor got some yesterday.

Anyone had anything similar happen?

— Jade in South Africa

Yes, Jade, many others have had similar experiences. See their stories on our Phantom Smells, Sounds, Lights (and touches and other physical phenomena), and in our story archive of People Ghosts.

Haunted asylum bathhouse

Haunted asylum bathhouse

Even before I knew of the haunted asylum bathhouse, a lot of weird stuff happened to me. First, let me be clear on one thing: This was at my parents’ house. When I was thirteen, my grandparents got custody over me. The activity is still happening today at my house. For some reason, I believe that spirits become attached to me. I also believe I was connected with psychic abilities as a child. It would not be much of a surprise if there was a form of paranormal phenomena happening because I always believed in the paranormal.

I lived in the town of Mount Clemens; it is a small place with some buildings and little suburbs, which I lived in at the time. It was a small, house with a basement and the garage was in our backyard, strangely.

“The place once was a mental asylum.”

A little way down is a hospital. Not the Mount Clemens general hospital, another one, near Chesterfield, I believe.

Well, I know about it because my mother was suffering from schizophrenia, which is a main reason of me having to live with my grandparents. On a visit, I spoke to her about it, and she told me the other patients had spoken about how the place once was a mental asylum. This as a matter of fact, is true. I didn’t believe it at first because, hell, would you believe someone who said that it was haunted? Anyway, my mom had said the nurses and doctors confirmed this.

“They never wanted to go to the haunted asylum bathhouse.”

The patients eerily complained about the same thing: They never wanted to go to the bathhouse. The bathhouse was in the basement part of the hospital, it was abandoned and run down. The nurses told my mom that it was just dirty, out-of-condition bathtubs, rusty water heaters, and the main electricity box.

Many patients had complained that when they went down there, (I don’t know why there was a reason to go there!) they would hear of whispers and screams and see weird things. They would hear footsteps and see black shapes at night.

The patient next to her even described having a night terror about being in the bathhouse, surrounded by doctors while she was strapped on a cold metal table and being tortured with rusty lab equipment. She had also had night terrors about getting electric therapy. At first I thought this was complete BS because my mom had obviously been drugged to calm down, and the patients may have been, too. But after a little research, I did learn that this was actually true. I one day hope to visit that place.

War ghosts haunt converted church

WWI ghosts haunt converted church.

Converted church in England houses WWI ghosts.

So, I live in a converted church and always feel wary that something is within my bed room or as if something is watching me. Only a few days ago I felt like researching my home and I discovered that the church car park was a grave yard back in World War I. WWI ghosts?

“I can speak to ghosts. … Something was in my bed.”

I have also found out I can speak to ghosts. I woke up feeling like something was in my bed and I couldn’t move, I just lay and then moved as quickly as I possibly could, I turned over with my back to the object. I then couldn’t sleep as I saw a figure of a women standing next to my bed so then I turned over again and tried to forget about it.

“I heard footsteps and knocking on my door.”

A few weeks later I began to see things and heard footsteps and knocking on my door. I then recorded it on my phone so that I could play it to my parents as I was hesitant to get off my bed. That night I saw a girl lay at the end of my bed and a little boy stood next to her with what looked like a gas mask around his neck. I decided to lie so that I couldn’t see anything, and woke up early hours in the morning with a child’s voice whispering in my ear.

I now see these people in my room almost once a week and feel as though they follow me round school and are watching me sleep. But these past few nights I can’t sleep and have had the bed cover pulled off me and had things going missing in my bedroom, has anybody also had this?

“Footsteps pacing … But no one was there.”

“Footsteps pacing … But no one was there.”

It was a cold October night. I was asleep until 2:37. All I can hear is footsteps pacing around my room. But no one was there. It could have been the neighbors in the apartment below. I believed that until I heard whistling in the kitchen. Still, no one was there!!! I couldn’t sleep or move. All I could think of was, “What would happen if I checked on the noises I was hearing?” I couldn’t risk it so I sat up all night till I saw the sun rise.

Lights out. Phantom sounds of water running and more.

Lights out … then water running and TV turned on

My husband was away this weekend at a high school reunion. I turned the TV off, locked the house, fed the cat, turned the lights out, and went to bed.

At three o’clock in the morning on Saturday, I woke up and heard water running.

I listened to the water sound for a while when I was in bed to try to locate it. Thought about water going through the radiator, but didn’t have the heat on that day. Didn’t sound like it was in the pipes or the dishwasher, which was off. I got up to see what it was.

The water sound stopped as I walked out of the bedroom.

Also strange that when I got into the kitchen, the water sound stopped, but I heard voices … the TV was on! The cat was sleeping in the bedroom with me and the remote control was on the sofa with nothing near it to turn it on.

After lights out, the TV turned on!

I definitely turned the TV off. The TV wasn’t on when I went to bed. I would have heard if I left it on. I was in the next room and up for a while reading and didn’t hear it. It seems that the TV went on as I walked into the kitchen which is right behind the living room.

I turned all the lights on and slept on the couch after staying awake until 5:30 watching TV. I have no idea what it was all about!

Spirit Presence of Loved Ones Passed

The Spirit Presence of Loved Ones Passed

Loved ones passed: A few years back when I would shut the lights out with only my TV on I could feel a presence watching me. My hairs on my arms would stick up and my heart would start beating fast. This went on for about two years. I never saw anything. To this day I can feel a presence from time to time.

Sometimes I feel like someone touches me or sits next to me when my back is turned. I also hear my name from time to time, too. Could it be love ones passed checking up on me?

— Jessica in Massachusetts

I believe the spirits of loved ones passed make their presence known. I’ve had the same experience, often accompanied by the smell of flowers, pipe tobacco, or cologne. — Kat
